The New Arrival

The New Arrival
A frightened passenger
A truck brings Ruby to the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. Mack presents her as a way to sell more tickets, but her fear and reluctance to leave the truck reveal a vulnerable young animal, not an attraction.
Stella's welcome
Stella limps up the ramp and reaches Ruby with her trunk. The baby answers that gesture, then follows Stella inside. Their immediate contact gives Ruby a source of comfort while establishing the harsh limits of her new enclosure.
A Story of Rescue

A Story of Rescue
A frightening memory
Ruby tells Ivan and Bob how she wandered near a village and fell into a water-filled pit. She remembers being terrified and believing she might die, a past experience that complicates her arrival as a captive circus animal.
Human kindness remembered
Villagers use ropes to pull Ruby out and guide her back to her family. Her account challenges Bob's blanket distrust of people and gives Ivan evidence that human action can protect as well as harm.
Stella's Final Request

Stella's Final Request
A promise takes shape
As Stella's infected foot and failing health leave her increasingly weak, she asks Ivan to protect Ruby and find her a life unlike her own. Ivan understands the request before Stella finishes explaining it.
Responsibility accepted
Ivan promises on his word as a silverback. Stella dies soon afterward, leaving him with grief and a concrete duty: Ruby must not be left to grow old in the same kind of confinement.
A Picture of Home

A Picture of Home
Imagining an alternative
Ivan sees a zoo advertisement on television and studies its grass, rocks, other elephants, and enclosing wall. He recognizes that it is imperfect, yet it offers Ruby companionship and room beyond the mall's performance ring.
The unfinished appeal
He paints the imagined refuge as a large picture, hiding its many pieces from Mack. The work converts his promise into a plan, but Ivan cannot yet communicate what the scattered images mean.
Ruby's Departure

Ruby's Departure
Fear of another box
Ruby initially resists the transport box because leaving Ivan and Bob feels like losing her new family. Ivan explains that this journey leads to a safer place, but he also knows why boxes frighten him.
A new family ahead
Ruby finally enters the box and leaves for the zoo. She carries the stories of Stella, Ivan, Bob, and Julia with her, while later footage shows her among other elephants, relaxed and joyful.
